GREENPEACE COMMUNITY

What is the Greenpeace Community petition platform?

The Greenpeace Community platform provides online petition and event tools for anyone leading flaxroots change for the health of Papatūānuku. The platform is designed for anyone to launch, run and deliver their own local or national campaign.

Use the petition, event and communication tools to reach and mobilise people around a cause you believe in.

Who leads the petitions on this platform?

Everyone has the ability to spark change for a more just, healthy and sustainable world. All the campaigns you see here are based in Aotearoa and led by members of the public, communities and grassroots action groups.

By signing a petition or joining an event on the platform you can support a local campaign led by everyday people on an environmental issue close to your heart.

Who hosts the Community platform?

The Community platform is hosted by Greenpeace Aotearoa. All the campaigns you see here are based here in New Zealand and work in some way to ensure the ability of the earth to nurture life in all its diversity.

Individual campaigns are created, led and managed by members of the public. Greenpeace staff have reviewed and moderated the petitions in line with the Greenpeace mission

Why does Greenpeace host a Community platform?

While Greenpeace Aotearoa is focused on key environmental issues such as dairy intensification and industrial fishing, we know there are many pressing environmental issues in regions across Aotearoa. In your local region you’ll know what the key issues are, and the possible solutions.

In the face of so many threats to biodiversity, oceans, land, and climate, our planet needs more of us to stand up for the environment. It needs a wealth of solutions and we don’t need to wait for permission to act.

How does signing petitions make a difference?

Petitions can be one very effective tactic within campaigns. A petition can be:

  • A simple action for anyone to join together and show support;
  • A way to spark important and necessary conversations about the environment in your community or network;
  • A way to build and nurture a community of supporters around one important issue;
  • A way to show the public support that already exists to pressure the decision maker;
  • A way to engage with local political processes;
  • A way to start conversations with anyone - local community leaders, politicians, businesses, personalities, academics, creatives – people who may influence the public conversation.

How many signatures do I need to win a campaign?

You don’t need thousands of signatures to win if you have a bunch of passionate people who care about the issue. Sometimes a petition ask can be achieved with a hundred people who show up when you need them most.

How does Greenpeace support the community campaigns?

Anyone can launch a petition and organise events using the digital tools on Greenpeace Community. If you’d like to talk with someone about an idea for a campaign before launching a petition, email us at [email protected].

Once the petition has been reviewed by the Greenpeace crew and approved in line with the Greenpeace Aotearoa mission it will be live on the platform.

Once launched, as the petition leads, you and/or your group will have full responsibility for the campaign.

The Greenpeace crew will be on hand to help promote and are able to share tips on how to build a petition-based, people-powered campaign.

Ask us any question about strategy, communications or tactics, by emailing us at [email protected]

I’m a petition lead - can I email the signatories?

Petition starters and event hosts are able to email the signatories through the website.

The privacy settings mean petition starters do not have access to email addresses, and are not able to download the email addresses of signatories or RSVPs.

Besides starting a petition, what else can I do in my campaign?

As the petition lead you’ll have access to the admin management tools to grow your campaign.

Share the petition on social media, and ask your supporters to share it with their networks. Communicate with signers by email.

Download the petition and collect signatures offline, to then enter your data easily into the system.

Use the event tools to host webinars, public meetings, demonstrations and protests. You can also communicate with people who RSVP to events by email.

When you’re ready to deliver the petition download a physical copy, print it out and organise an event to deliver to your target.

How do I grow my campaign?

To lead a successful campaign for change can require a little bit of everything - planning, communication, event organisation, fundraising and outreach.

A dash of creative thinking and good judgement along the way also makes a big difference!

Not everyone has every skill or experience so we recommend looking around for who can help. It could be a group of friends, or people already working on this same issue, or allied groups.

Also remember the people who sign your petition care about the cause. They will have their own skills, experience and ideas - ask them to help you every chance you can!

We’ve collated a lot of our experience using petitions within effective campaigns. Check out our tips here: A guide to campaigning | Grow your campaign

How do l end my petition?

You have different options to end your petition. Using the petition admin tools you can ‘hide’ the petition at any time; you can ‘end’ the petition and hide it so it's not searchable; ‘end’ the petition for any reason and keep it searchable; or ‘end’ the petition and mark it as a success.

When ending a petition you have the option to add an ‘ended’ message to let anyone who finds your petition know what has happened with the campaign.

Does Greenpeace endorse the petitions on the Community platform?

Every campaign you see on this platform aligns with the Greenpeace Aotearoa mission. However, campaigns are led independently from Greenpeace Aotearoa. All tactics and communications are the responsibility of the campaigners and are not necessarily endorsed by Greenpeace.

What can I campaign on?

Greenpeace provides the Community platform for campaigns and events working on environmental kaupapa, based in Aotearoa.

I want to campaign on something different, what can I do?

The OurActionStation platform uses the same petition technology and hosts campaigns on a wide range of issues. You can set up a petition on the Parliament website although be aware it’s not designed for campaigning. For international campaigns you may consider the Avaaz platform.

What if I have a complaint about content on this site?

If you have a complaint about any content posted on Greenpeace Community you should notify us at [email protected]. Once your complaint is received, we will forward the complaint to the author of the content within 48 hours of receiving your complaint.

Who created the petition technology?
